Delivery Timelines & Risk of Loss

While we make every effort to dispatch orders on the same day (for orders placed before 12:00 PM Monday–Friday), estimated delivery dates are non-binding timeframe targets provided by carriers. Under UK consumer law, risk of loss or damage to goods passes to you upon physical delivery to your delivery address or to a carrier nominated by you.

Damaged or Missing Items in Transit

Please inspect your packages upon arrival. If your parcel arrives visibly damaged, please notify the delivery driver and contact us at sales@oldschooloval.com within 48 hours of receipt, along with photos of the damaged packaging and components, so we can raise a claim with Royal Mail and dispatch replacement parts swiftly.

International Deliveries & Import Customs Duties

For orders shipped outside the United Kingdom, items are dispatched DDU (Delivered Duty Unpaid). International buyers are responsible for any local import VAT, customs tariffs, duties, or administrative handling fees levied by the destination country's customs authority upon arrival.

Failed Delivery & Re-routing Charges

Please ensure your delivery address is accurate and complete at checkout. If a package is returned to us due to an incorrect/incomplete address provided by the customer or failure to collect the parcel from a local Royal Mail delivery office after a failed attempt, additional re-postage fees will apply to re-dispatch the items.

Getting it back together!

1. If your tight for space, then the first thing is to get the suspension on and make the car water tight - you'll be able to move the car around if you need to and there is nothing like working outside in the sun. We fitted up the boot and doors in this shot but removed them later, just to ensure the fit was good and the lines were right.

2. Once the suspension is fitted and before the steering rack is fitted, you will need to fit the interior loom, heater box and wiper mechanism. Don't forget to run the interior light loom up the passenger A pillar and into the light slot central to the rear view mirror, tape this in place, for later. Also if you have one, run the heated rear window loom into position, as you'll be wanting to fit the glass soon and connect the rear earth strap and leave the live with taped to the rear pillar.

3. Boy, your motoring.... Now connect the steering column and ensure this is fitted to the crash pad of the dash, and then connect loom to ignition lock, indicator stalk etc.... Ensure you fit the column into the steering knuckle

4. If you are moving the car in and out, then best to get it water tight!, so we need to fit the glass and before that the roof lining! For this you will need about 8 Bulldog clips and nothing more than a new headlining and a pot of Bostic glue.

5. Get the roof lining the correct way around and fit the roof rods through the sleeves in the

underside of the lining, if they are tight, use silicon, or WD40 on them so they slide in easily.

Fit the little plastic clips into there holes, you should have 4 each side! If all is OK, then fit the rods

into position and leave the lining to sag.

6. The probability of getting a new lining that fits perfect is remote, and you will need to trim this - but you can do this last if your careful. Start by gluing the top edge of the windscreen where lining is going to fit, don't worry too much if you go around too far, but don't get glue on the paintwork - offer up the lining and glue this in the same place, leave to dry for 10 minutes and then gently pull the lining into position, once you are happy with the result fit the bulldog clips and leave to dry as per recommendations of glue you are using. repeat this process for the rear - but remember that you need to make the lining nice and tight, don't worry about the sides as this will come taught when you glue around the door and fit under the gripper around and over the rear windows. (neat trick) is to cut a star shape in the centre of the interior light hole and fit the internal light.

7. The front and rear glass can be fitted once the glue is semi dry - but firstly cut off any excess lining neatly. When fitting the glass, take care not to pull the roof lining. Might be worth getting a specialist to do this part for the cost of about £50.00 - £70.00

8. As you can see in the last pictures above, we have not glued the door section and only tucked the gripper section in place, the lining will sag a little over time and we don't need to worry too much about this, so we'll leave it for a later section.

9. Engine bay loom and rear loom can now be fitted and dependant upon which way you do this, the following sections can go either way. I.e. Boot completion or engine fit!

Also fit the bonnet release cable, through to the engine bay and secure at the bulk head.

11. Engine bay. You will need an engine hoist here, and a couple of willing mates, again, don't rush and make sure everything is clean and polished before you refit it. We chose to fit the braking system before engine, in one car and then fitted the engine without braking system in another, see below, no difference either way!!

Likewise, the rad can be fitted before or after, your choice. Fit exhaust and gearbox and secure to prop shaft. While your under there, run the petrol hose and secure to tank and petrol pump. Try to fit new clips, if possible, as this will improve the finish of your car no end! Fit the rad and connect all hoses, and electrical connectors in engine bay

12. Fit the front lights and indicators, ensure at this point you have good earth's. Run loom out to lighting through holes in inner wings, secure grommets and connect front lights and indicators. Ensure all loom connectors are secure and in good condition. Ensure all earth connections are made, as this may result in electrical issues later.

13. Fit bonnet rubbers to inner wing rails and bonnet, fit bonnet stay once you have fitted the locking clips and bonnet release cable and ensured that the mechanism is working effectively.

Recap

So, the suspension is fitted, loom, engine, box and everything is connected. Roof lining is fitted as is the front and rear screen. You may have a little list of spare parts that you need to get, so keep it handy as when you are working through the rest of the rebuild, your bound to find more.

14. Might as well finish that interior off, but firstly complete the roof lining. By now the lining would, if it was going to have sagged and you may need to remove the section we left earlier from the gripper.

If all is OK, then glue as before the door sections, one side at a time, copy the same process as the front screen and pull tight the lining that is near the door. Glue this and again wait for it to become semi dry, retain using Bulldog clips, one dry, fit the door seal, to retain the lining in position and then repeat the process on the other side. But this time ensure you have no ripples. It should be nice and tight, as in the pictures below

15. Once happy, trim any excess away and secure into gripper along down to the rear parcel shelf area and then fit the interior courtesy light and rear view mirror, also sun visors.

16. Fit and secure the rear parcel shelf and then fit the rear arch vinyl's and the rear plate vinyl trims that site under the rear seat. You may also wish to fit at this point any sound proofing you have and also the rear door cards before fitting the rear seat.

17. We have chosen to fit the seat in it's position and bolt it in. (see above)

18. Inside the vehicle we fit the clocks and the dash top first, then connect al of the loom inside the vehicle, heated rear window is a separate loom and this is already in place as it was one of the first things you did. Connect up the HRW switch, cigar lighter and Hazard warning light flasher if you car has one!

19. Now fit the remaining switches into the switch panel/crash pad and connect to the loom, and don't forget to screw in your courtesy light switches and connect them either. Connect up the heater hoses and air vents as seen above, secure the clocks to the dash top and any other loom connections, fit steering shroud and steering wheel.

20. When fitting the carpet work from the centre out, most new carpets come uncut for either gear stick or handbrake, so it is essential to make sure you have an even starting point. Centralise the carpet and then work both ways toward the door openings, ensure you have an even amount of carpet at each side and also that you have the correct amount up towards the bulk head of the car. Once you are happy, trim excess and cut holes for gear stick and handbrake. Fit carpet edge trims and seat belts, seat belt buckles. Also now fit the washer pump and connect up, this will look nicer sitting over the carpet

21. Fit and secure handbrake and also ensure cable is fitted underside of car. NB.. If you are fitting a centre console, do this before fitting seats. as it needs to be screwed into the gearbox tunnel.

22. Seat should be simple, once fitted secure gear stick. We usually leave this till last as it can damage seats if you are moving them around for location of holes.

23. Doors, get some help here, we usually build them up off the car, it's easier, then lift them and hold them steady while they are secured with new split pins, make sure the hinge holes are clean and free from paint, it will help when you drift the new pins in.

25. Fit all exterior chrome trim, front bumpers, grille, wing/boot badges, number plates and wipers. 

A completely fitted up car! 

Remember, a full restoration can take years and many people will give up long before they are anywhere near to finishing, while this guide is in many places vague, it is just a guide - a way to motivate yourself to finish what you started. We said it at the start, and we'll say it again - if you need help, or advice,  just ask

Follow the step by step instruction on how to decal your RS2000, it'll be worth obtaining a couple of decent tools to have at hand such as:

A decent squeegee large & small, some vinyl sticker applicator available from any sign writing company (many people use diluted washing up liquid) You will also need a sharp knife and scissors.

It is best to degrease the whole of the car to remove any wax that might have been applied using a professional wax remover prior to fitting decals. Methylated spirits will remove grease, wipe the car panels over with meths after you have de-waxed the car.

Starting with the largest panel first, the back wing, offer the transfer to the panel and align with eye, the top of the main decal and the lower edge of the strip should fit between the swage line of the panel.

The end point of the decal should be approximately 36 - 38mm from the end of the wing. Mark the decal and edge of the panel to reduce the risk of movement as you move through the side of the car, fitting the decals. Note that the door section is wide one end and this should be obvious when following these instructions.

Follow the same principal through the door and front wing, and remember to mark each decal and panel. Once the decals and panels have been marked, they are now ready to be fitted.

Remove the backing paper from the decal and lay flat, spray a fine mist of applicator to the decal and the same to the panel, this will allow you to slide the decal into position, and fit to the marked positions.

When the decal is fitted correctly, squeegee out all applicator and leave to dry for about 15 minutes. If you feel confident, you can remove the decal release paper at once, but be sure that you do not lift the strip and/or stretch it. Try to leave sufficient decal on the longer sections such as doors, to contour around the inner side of the panel.

Repeat this through the side of the car and then follow this process for the passenger side of the vehicle. 

The bonnet decals come in 3 parts as do the boot decals, it is important to line the front lower decal in the right position, with approximately 30mm between the lower part of the strip to the edge of the bonnet.

When fitting the upper decals line by eye and take care that you are fitting the correct side as they are different.

Line each side and ensure that they have approximately 30mm to the point of the decal to the top of the bonnet, and mark all decals and bonnet prior to removal and spraying with applicator.

We have laid the bottom edge of the lower strip about 10mm from the lower edge of the boot and left sufficient to overlay around the inside of the boot. Mark the decal and panel and then spray boot panel with applicator and offer decal to panel, when the decal is aligned to the markingsz, squeegee the applicator fluid out.

Finally, it may be necessary to pin air bubbles out from between the decal and panel, leave the decals a few days before you attempt this as the air could evaporate.

Regardless of model, all MK1 Ford Escorts under the RS banner were manufactured with the type 49 shell, this was the same shell which was produced at Dagenham and then shipped to Halewood for strengthening.

Twin Cam 1968/7

The Ford Escort Twin Cam's birth was created out of the demise of the Cortina MK2 Lotus, with over capacity of engines, the Twin Cam (TC) was designed at Ford Motor Company's Halewood Plant in Liverpool, Mersyside.

Although the original cars (pre 1970) were rather bland, subtle changes are noticeable from the normal type 49 shells built at AVO in Aveley. The original cars were also very basic with just head light, heater and wiper switches.

However,  the Lotus power plant never changed through production and this car is probably the most sought after Escort MK1 money can buy.

What to check for

First noticeable difference under the engine bay is the engine stabiliser bar, securing the gearbox to the bulkhead, the bar is bolted to the bulkhead and held in place with a large rubber bush, similar to the pictures below.

The plate at the rear of the bush is a crude attempt at welding, but a key point in originality, so look for clues of neat welds and then start asking questions.

The majority of Ford cars that I have seen, look like the great Stevie Wonder had the welding gun!

On the early models the bonnet was opened via a push button on the front grille, this changed in 1970, to a left hand bonnet pull and again in 71 to a right hand bonnet pull.

Other points are the GT seats, similar in design to the waffle (Areotex) Mexico seats but with the tilt button at the bottom of the seat instead of in the backrest.

 
Whilst checking the car ensure that the dash has not been cut to accommodate the 6 clock dash, this is quite a detailed job and many people would fail to do this in an attempt to re-shell a car.

Additionally that the stone deflector bolts are in the boot floor and better still that the stone deflector is also there.

Has the car got tramp bars? All Twin Cam's were fitted with the Mexico axle, and so should be fitted with tramp bars.

In the early models as you look through the boot of the car, the rear of the seat is not visible, Ford fitted a solid panel, it was not until 1970 that this changed and went to the traditional panel that we are all familiar with.

Aadditionally the TC had the battery in the boot and the spare wheel was held in place with a large bolt passing though the floor and the stone deflector. A major criticism under road tests was the little amount of boot space as a result of this design.

Mexico 1969/75

The Escort Mexico was built from 1969-75, at Aveley in Essex. At Ford Motor Company's Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO) Production capacity was approximately 152 cars per week, nothing in today's standards of mass production

Dagenham operations reached capacity prior to final closure of 1300 vehicles per day. Over 700 cars per shift.

Aveley production capacity was simply, manufacture to supply, and the demand was great. In late 72, demand for a higher specification car saw the development of the RS 2000 (see RS 2000 buyers guide)

What to check for:

Check the rear of the vehicle under the boot floor, there should be approximately eight bolts visible, these were used to secure a stone deflector. Some of the cars have retained the stone deflector, but many have been removed

As with the RS 2000, anti-tramp bars are fitted to the rear axle and run to the front of the rear wheel arch, check that they are fitted. Whilst at the rear of the car, check that the rear arches have been rolled.

Another test for the earlier Mexico is to ensure that this bolt hole is on in the boot floor pan, this was used to secure the spare wheel. Later models used the wheel well and the battery was moved to the front of the vehicle.


If this checks out to be OK, go to the engine bay and start checking the following.

Check the strengthening around the suspension top plate. (see photo 2) These were spot welded.

Chassis plates are secured by pop rivets on the front slam panel, you can clearly see these in the shot above as you stand at the front of the car, the chassis plate is to the left of the bonnet release catch.

The AVO plate will be on the right next to the bonnet stay hole (see a + b photo 3) Note that this early Mexico has the battery fitted in the boot, positioned in the spare wheel well. The spare was secured on the boot floor and reduced load space considerably.



The chassis plates should match the V5 (logbook) if you have any doubts please seek professional advice, contact the AVO owners club. They have registrars dedicated to Mexico RS2000 and all other AVO cars.

Unlike the RS 2000, the Mexico's interior can come in a variety of trim, vinyl seat's and rubber mats, RS Recaro's with carpet, custom contour bucket seats, which appear to be different for driver and passenger.

(this is correct) Map light fitted under the dash on the passenger side. Unfortunately, over the years, many people have changed interiors to suit i.e. replaced vinyl trim with Beta cloth Recaro's. Unless you are considering presenting your car for concourse.

I wouldn't worry too much, at the end of the day it comes down to personal preference.

RS 2000 1973/75

The RS 2000 was built out of demand for a higher specification vehicle than the Mexico, produced on the same production line as the Mexico at Aveley at Ford Motor Company's Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO).

The Higher specification changes included full custom cloth interior as standard, 2.0L pinto engine and a slightly higher road height. Original price for the Mk1 RS 2000 was £1230, incredible to think that today, almost 30 years after production stopped, good cars are changing hands for over £10,00.00 plus.

What to check for:

The RS 2000 model was slightly different to the Mexico with more strengthening around the inner wings, look under the front wheel arch and check the suspension turret, this should run the majority of the way down inside the inner wing.

Also that top of the inner wing has a strengthening plate. However, the majority of AVO changes run through all models including the RS1600 and the Mexico



Check the rear of the vehicle under the boot floor, there should be approximately eight bolts visible, these were used to secure a stone deflector. All RS2000's were never fitted with the stone deflector, but retained the fixings.

Also check the rear arches have been rolled, the fuel tank should be painted in primer, Fords never painted the fuel tanks in the RS range of vehicles, so they should be in grey primer.

The shot above shows the securing bolts for the stone deflector, if the car you are viewing does not have these be careful. Unless it has been fitted with a new floor pan the car might not be what you expect.

While you are under the car, check the anti tramp bars, they are secured to the rear axle and run towards the front of the car.

If all this checks out OK, go to the engine bay, study the chassis plate and check this against the logbook. The first 4 digits should be BFAT followed by a series of numbers that determine the colour, transmission and other details.

The interior of the RS2000 will differ slightly from car to car, things such as centre consoles, head rests came as optional extras, the pictures below detail such differences, but are both genuine RS 2000's.

I believe that the wood pack was an option on the RS range of vehicles, similar to the Mexico. Owners have changed there vehicles to suit over the years and these slight additions/improvements are down to personal preference.

This vehicle is fitted with wood trim and has the correct 3 spoke RS steering wheel.

No wood pack fitted, but vehicle has centre console.

Wheels also are of much debate, but be careful - there is only one type of MK1 RS alloy, that is below with the centre cap being located through the rear of the wheel and simply being held in position via the wheel being secured to the hub of the axle, Steel wheels were also an option.

Sold in clearly labelled packs that can be left on the shelf until needed and easily picked when required. Packs usually contain the correct quantities to cover a two door car. We also do 4 door packs as well. If there is a pack quantity we don’t do, contact us directly and we will be more than happy to accommodate your requirements.

6. Stock Availability & Back-Orders

Stock levels fluctuate across online, trade show, and phone sales. If an item in your order is temporarily out of stock, we will dispatch the available parts immediately and place the remaining item on back-order, shipping it to you as soon as available with no extra delivery charges.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, AVO Suffolk Ltd. shall not be liable for any indirect, special, or consequential losses, including garage labor fees, vehicle downtime, towing charges, or indirect damages arising from the use or inability to use any component purchased from us.
